Bottom line: once you verify that a tournament is real, the next question is not just where it is. It is what kind of trip shape that event actually supports: city, island, or regional.
Why trip shape matters
Two tournaments can both be real and still support completely different holidays. A city event can give you museum mornings and easy evening dinners. An island event can give you recovery and beach rhythm. A regional event can require you to widen the map to get the best experience.
If you skip this step, you can end up planning the wrong type of trip around the right tournament.
Choose a city trip when...
Pick a city-based chess holiday when the event is in a place that is genuinely pleasant to navigate daily and has enough cultural or food value to make short windows worthwhile. Malmö and Stockholm are good examples in the current project.
City trips work best for players who like structure, short movement loops, and easy partner independence.
Choose an island trip when...
Choose an island or beach-led trip when recovery quality is your main edge. Mallorca is the current strongest example in the library. The event gives the trip structure, but the rest of the island does most of the emotional and physical recovery work.
This is often the most forgiving model if you are trying to combine chess with actual holiday energy.
Choose a regional trip when...
Choose a regional trip when the event is real, but the venue town is not enough on its own. Azkoitia is the clearest example. The tournament can still be worth it, but only if you let the wider Basque trip carry more of the holiday value.
This model also works when the event city and the best leisure city are nearby but not identical, as in the Malmö and Copenhagen regional layer.
The fast decision test
- Would I still like this place if I lost early? If yes, city or island can work.
- Does the venue town feel too thin on its own? If yes, think regional.
- Do I need recovery more than stimulation? If yes, bias toward island or softer coastal models.
- Am I sharing the trip with a non-player? If yes, city or island usually beats small-town pure tournament travel.
Official tournament verification
Before you book, verify the current official event details because dates and entry windows can change.
- Mallorca team event listing
- Balearic federation festival page
- Azkoitia event listing
- Azkoitia organizer page
- TePe Sigeman event listing
- TePe Sigeman organizer site
Use this framework after you verify the event, then decide whether you want a city week, island week, or a wider regional route.
