How to Pick Between City, Island, and Regional Chess Trips

Why trip shape matters

Two tournaments can both be real and still call for completely different holidays. A city event gives you museums, food and easy evenings. An island event leans toward recovery and slower days. A regional event asks you to think about the map, because the venue may be a small town that is a train or bus ride from the place you would actually want to stay.

Choose a city trip when the venue is easy to live in

City trips suit players who like short daily routes and a partner who can wander independently. Three verified examples from our guides:

• Prague: the Prague Open runs 8–15 January 2027, with Open B for FIDE under 2000 and unrated players.
• Zurich: the 50th Zürcher Weihnachtsopen runs 26–30 December 2026 and includes a Hobby section for players rated up to 1800. The airport train to the central station takes about 10 minutes.
• Amsterdam: the Amsterdam Chess Open runs 23–25 October 2026 at Apollohal. From Schiphol, the train to Amsterdam Zuid takes under 8 minutes.

Choose an island trip when recovery is your edge

Islands give you built-in distance from the tournament hall, but they add ferries, flights and fewer options if something goes wrong. Verified examples:

• Isle of Wight: the Ocean Chess Tournament runs 10–15 November 2026 in Shanklin. Foot-passenger ferries from Portsmouth Harbour to Ryde take about 22 minutes.
• Menorca: Open Chess Menorca (6th edition) is announced for 30 March–4 April 2027 in Ciutadella.
• Formentera: there is no tournament on the island itself. The nearest real event is on Ibiza, so Formentera works as a rest-days destination, not an event base.

Choose a regional trip when the venue is not the best base

Sometimes the event is genuine but sits outside the city you would pick for a holiday. Plan the whole region, not just the town:

• Copenhagen: the Kronborg Chess Open (5–9 May 2027) is in Snekkersten next to Helsingør, about an hour by train from Copenhagen Airport.
• Salzburg: the Sonnenterrasse Schach-Open is held in Schwarzach im Pongau, about 70 km from Salzburg Airport.
• Cagliari: the nearest verified open is in Oristano, about 94 km away by road.
• Nice: the Cannes Chess Open (22–28 February 2027) is in Cannes, not Nice.

A quick decision test

• Would you enjoy the place if you lost early? If yes, a city or island works.
• Can you reach the venue without a long transfer each day? If not, choose your base carefully or pick a different event.
• Does your travel partner need things to do away from the hall? Cities handle that best.
• Is recovery the priority? Islands and quiet regional towns are strongest, but check transport first.
